Strobist 102

09-11-2010

I must confess and share something that I’ve done which is really quite dumb. Placing a wireless trigger in the refrigerator along with my AAA batteries is not a good thing. The cold temperature must have killed its capacity to trigger my strobes. The red light still flashes whenever I push the trigger test button, but none of the flashes are actually triggered by it. I wonder if a pocket wizzard would have stopped working if it had been left in a refrigerator for a week or so. Oh well… At least, the flash trigger by Yongnuo is only $15.00 USD a piece so I went ahead and ordered two more from eBay. Meanwhile, I’ve been forced to use one of my YN460’s on my camera’s hot shoe during an impromptu shoot with my youngest daughter below.

My eldest daughter and a couple of her closest friends came over one weekend for another photo shoot. I set up a quick home studio using my bed sheet as background, one YN460 through a translucent white umbrella, another YN460 on my camera, and a 42 inch silver reflector to bounce off light onto their hairs. Here are a some of the pictures from that shoot.

I’ve since grown more comfortable shooting with only a single strobe on my camera and/or using one flash to trigger another. I took these pictures of my baby daughter earlier today while waiting for my son to get out of football practice.

My son and his friend, Perry, were out throwing the football in the park across the street right before dinner. The sun was almost completely gone so I figured that it was the perfect time to use a couple of strobes and capture some of them in action.
